How to Stay Healthy Today

We all want to be fit and healthy, regardless of our age, gender, social status, or nationality. Yet many of us don’t know where to begin. If this is you, here are a few important tips to consider.

Not Just in Your Hands

There are plenty of things you can do yourself to improve your overall health. Some of the most common ones include enough physical activity, making the right choices regarding the amount, type, and variety of foods you eat, and sleeping a minimum of six to seven hours every night. By taking a proactive approach to them, you will be healthier long-term and feel stronger, which will, in turn, allow you to have a better quality of life to share with the people you care about most.

Still, there are instances in which you need the assistance of others, moments in your life when you require the guidance of those with more expertise. Naturally, we are talking about medical practitioners like doctors, nurses, and physicians. In cases like these, it is in your best interests to choose wisely as you entrust these men and women with your well-being, not to mention your life.

Luckily, medical technology has developed to such an extent that today, there are many highly qualified health specialists with deep knowledge of a wide range of subjects, including alternative, complementary, and holistic medicine as well as integrative physical and mental health. Through functional lab testing and individualized care plans, they can help you progress along the way towards achieving a happier, more vigorous day-to-day life.

It’s All About You

If you have ever been in any kind of accident, or even if you haven’t, you know that it is you who has to go through surgery and rehabilitation. You have to endure the inconveniences of not being able to move and cover the many expenses that such an ordeal might entail. Likewise, if you are as fit as a fiddle, it is also you who will benefit most, not your parents, your children, your friends, your colleagues at work, and most certainly not your department supervisor or boss.

Because of this, you must learn to put yourself first when it comes to your health, to accept what you can realistically manage, and say no to the things you cannot handle or will somehow compromise your well-being. For instance, if you have been working 60-hour weeks for the past few months and you are asked to do something over the weekend that will take time away from a much-needed rest, you should decline, regardless of who is asking.

By having the courage to say no when you are unable to, you will earn the respect of others and give your body and mind the necessary boost to continue treading along, to keep on moving forward through the stresses of the daily grind.

A Matter of Habits

Former United States Secretary of State Colin Powell once said, “If you are going to achieve excellence in big things, you develop the habit in little matters. Excellence is not an exception; it is a prevailing attitude.”

Of course, it is very easy to say that being healthy is only a matter of having the right habits and the discipline to follow them. Yet, if it were indeed a piece of cake, nobody would be overweight. Nobody would smoke, drink alcohol, or sit on the couch all day. Instead, we should exercise with frequency, eat nothing but the things that nurture our bodies, and continuously engage in behaviors to promote our mental well-being and emotional state.

But sadly, it isn’t. In fact, it is anything but. It is a mountain many of us spend our entire lives trying to climb, a challenge we sometimes cannot conquer, no matter how hard or how long we try.

Nevertheless, it isn’t impossible either. It is about taking an honest look at ourselves, understanding the behaviors that have driven us to where we are now, accepting that even though we have failed, we are not a failure, and then taking the necessary steps to change.

If you want to be the healthiest you can be, be open-minded and flexible about the treatments that you engage in and choose the people who will help you wisely. Also, understand that your well-being is, for the most part, about the decisions you make, and learn how to say no when you cannot do something. Finally, put in the time and effort to build the right habits. These are things we can all do to make the best out of our lives.
