Blepharoplasty – Six Things You Need to Know about Eyelid Surgery

One of the many cosmetic procedures in the world is blepharoplasty, a type of eyelid surgery that aims to correct problems with the eyelid as well as to improve the appearance of a persons’ eyelids. It is usually done in Asian countries like South Korea and Singapore, particularly because there are a lot of Asian people who view having double eyelids as a standard for beauty. This led to many undergoing surgery to give them double eyelids by visiting trusted cosmetic clinics such as Dr Samuel Ho Allure Plastic Surgery.

If you or a friend are considering getting the procedure, then you might want to have better knowledge of the procedure to better prepare for it. Here are a few things you need to know before you take the plunge:

  • Blepharoplasty is a safe and generally risk-free procedure.

If you are hesitant to undergo the procedure due to the possible risks of a surgical operation, then you should know that blepharoplasty is one of the safest and most trusted surgeries. For one, the surgery is done mostly externally, and will only deal with the internal part of the eyelid to remove excess fat.

The usual risks associated with surgery, such as internal bleeding, shock and infection are very rare occurrences in a blepharoplasty, and usually only happen if the surgeon is inexperienced or lacks skill. That is why it is vital that patients take the time to research and learn before they decide on a cosmetic surgeon.

  • It is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the world.

Although the eyelids are some of the smallest parts of the body, blepharoplasty is actually one of the most sought-after cosmetic surgeries all around the world. Why, then, is this the case?

As I’ve discussed above, many, and I mean many, people in Asia believe that having double eyelids is one of the most important indicators of a person’s beauty. This belief probably stemmed from the fact that a lot of Asian celebrities have double eyelids, which has then influenced the rest of the population with single eyelids.

Around 50% of Asians have single eyelids, which is a really significant chunk of the population. This is why blepharoplasty is a very popular surgery – it’s not only a very safe and risk-free procedure, it’s also a cosmetic procedure that 1 out of 2 Asian people may want.

Blepharoplasty has also been marketed heavily in several Asian countries like South Korea and here in Singapore. A-list celebrities have attested to the effectiveness and safety of the procedure, and have surely swayed a person or two to get the surgery.

The procedure has also gained popularity in Western countries, not only because of the increasing Asian population living there but also because it can also be done to address several problems or issues regarding the eyelids.

Although the most common reason for getting a blepharoplasty is to get double eyelids, it’s not the only reason. In fact, blepharoplasty is divided into two types – one for the upper eyelids and another for the lower eyelids.

Double eyelid surgery falls into the upper blepharoplasty category as it mostly involves operating on the upper part of the eyelids. Upper blepharoplasty is also used to fix other issues such as loose eyelids, excess skin, eyelid hooding and ptosis.

Lower blepharoplasty, on the other hand, focuses on operating on the lower eyelid. This type of eyelid surgery is done to address problems like wrinkles, crow’s feet, eyebags and droopy eyes.

Overall, blepharoplasty can address several eyelid problems and issues, and shouldn’t be thought of as a procedure to just get double eyelids. If you’re thinking of undergoing a blepharoplasty, make sure you inform your surgeon about what it is you want to achieve from the operation.

  • Blepharoplasty is not as painful as other surgical procedures.

Unlike other surgical procedures, blepharoplasty doesn’t carry as much risk. Due to that, it is usually not needed for the patient to be unconscious during the operation. There is still an option for the patient to be under general anesthesia if he/she wants to, but most blepharoplasties are often done under local anesthesia.

In fact, many patients undergo the procedure while awake. Once the local anesthesia kicks in, even if the patient is conscious, he/she will only feel minor discomfort during the procedure. Many patients who’ve undergone the procedure can attest that there is only minimal pain or discomfort while they were being operated on, and that it’s a generally safe procedure.

  • Recovery is relatively quick compared to other surgeries.

Blepharoplasty is usually a minimally-invasive surgery. This means that the incisions made during the operation are minimal, which results in a quicker and easier recovery for the patient. Some side effects may occur around your eyelids immediately after the procedure, such as redness, swelling or bruising. However, these side effects should gradually disappear in a few days.

During your recovery, which may only last a week, make sure to take any medication prescribed by your doctor for the surgery. You may also be asked to minimize your physical activity so that your body can focus on healing your wound. Once you feel that you’ve fully recovered, it’s best to inform your doctor about it so that he/she can give proper advice for you.

  • Blepharoplasty gives long-lasting results.

One advantage of a blepharoplasty compared to non-invasive alternatives like fillers is that the results last for a long time, sometimes even permanent. This is because, in the case of double eyelids, the incision done to create the effect is sutured together so that it lasts for a long time. Compare that with fillers where once the injectable runs out, you will have to repeat the procedure to achieve the result again.

If you’re looking for semi-permanent to permanent results, you cannot go wrong with getting a blepharoplasty. Just make sure to look for a trusted clinic or surgeon to minimize the risks involved with the procedure.
