Effects of Long-Term Cannabis Use – Amotivational Syndrome

Marijuana is one of those things that has taken a giant swing up and down. It started off as a recreational activity and medicinal item that people would use. It was used all over the world at one point. In the early mid-1990s, marijuana was made illegal by the US government. There are many theories as to why this happened. One of the theories is that the government has a bigger agenda to bring the pharmaceutical companies to a higher revenue industry. The best way to do this would be to get a plant that can be grown for free all over and make it illegal.

Over the years marijuana has come to show us that it can provide us great benefits amongst the medicinal aspect. It has relieved pain from cancer patients, has opened appetites for people going through chemotherapy. It helps glaucoma patients relieve the pressure from their eye while helping patients who get a lot of migraines. Marijuana has been a plant that can help in many ways. Not only medicinally but with recreational sales involved, the industry could be employing one of the most amount of employees in any industry. It is vast and huge. There is already word that is marijuana was made legal on the federal levels, there will be more jobs in the marijuana space than the manufacturing.

Right now in the United States, more than half the states have legalized marijuana for medical or recreational use. It is becoming a controversial topic that most people are leaning towards but with the good comes the bad. Somethings we were told about marijuana were true. In reality, marijuana might not be addicting but it can make you dependent on it after long term use. If you have experienced the following, then you are or have been dependent on marijuana before.

  • Increase in tolerance. The more you smoke the more you will realize you need to smoke to return to a level you were before.
  • Smoking when you don’t really want too. When you smoke all the time, sometimes you realize you’re smoking when you didn’t intend or feel like it.
  • Feeling the need to always have it on you. Even when you go out, you contemplate about taking it with you in case you want to smoke or your high comes down.
  • Using excuses to justify to smoke by doing other things. When you find yourself lying or doing other things so you can have the opportunity to smoke.

Long term use can cause a lot of downside. Smoking for long periods can bring on amotivational syndrome which is when you lose motivation to do things you use to have a passion for. This study was done in rats and it showed how rats lost the motivation to work for their rewards when they were having more THC pushed into them for long amount of time.

All in all, marijuana is not a harmful drug that everyone should run away from.  It is actually a mind opener and can bring a lot of positives to your world if used right. Unfortunately some people over do it and this is where it comes to bite you in the rear.
